When I was in my early teens, I drew my first and only map. Final Fantasy 9 had just come out and I decided I was going to make a Final Fantasy, so it would be best to come prepared. I estimated at what age I’d be old enough to start working at Square Enix and determined the number of my Final Fantasy that way – and so began my work on Final Fantasy 13. You will note that while I made an accurate estimate about the release schedule of future Final Fantasy games, I did not end up making Final Fantasy 13, but that’s a story for another time. I had a world to make, and worlds had maps. Every game I played had one for its overworld and every book I read then proudly displayed a map on its opening pages. A map set the stage for reader … Read the rest

First impressions of the PlayStation 5 are starting to circulate after a hands-on event, and various commentators are reporting that the console runs impressively quietly.

Anyone that’s played the likes of The Last of Us Part II or God of War on a PlayStation 4 or a PlayStation 4 Pro knows just how noisy the console can get. Once the fans kick in, you’d be forgiven for thinking a plane is taking off in your living room.

It seems that the noise issue has been addressed with Sony’s next generation of hardware, though. A set of hands-on previews seems to agree that the PlayStation 5 is an impressively quiet console.

“[…] What was shocking to me this time was how quiet the fan was,” says a write-up from Dengeki Online. “There must have been many people who were curious about this. It was so quiet!”

We’re finally getting to see more of the launch wave of PlayStation 5 titles, with Insomniac revealing a first look at hardware accelerated ray tracing effects in Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. A huge improvement is clearly evident in reflections from the tallest skyscraper to the smallest puddle, but bafflingly, the reveal was met with some vitriol on social media. Artefacts and compromises were highlighted, with some even suggesting that we weren’t seeing ray tracing at all. The reality is clear though: hardware RT is an emerging feature on brand new consoles developers are just getting to know, it’s computationally expensive so compromises are inevitable – and what we’re seeing here is very impressive stacked up against similar hybrid RT implementations seen in the PC space.

This Summer marked a distinct turning point regarding internal practices at Ubisoft and the community’s perception of the company all together. After numerous reports surfaced regarding abuse, misconduct, and power corruption leading to several high-profile execs being fired, the investigations into the underbelly of this studio’s culture continue. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot is leading the charge for the investigations and has published publicly the results of a recent employee survey. The results? Over 25 percent of employees witnessed or experienced firsthand workplace misconduct.

The referenced survey was conducted by a third-party research company and revealed more about the work culture seen over the past several years. The survey was anonymous and encapsulated over 14,000 working employees. At 25%, one in four workers reported that they have either experienced workplace misconduct or witnessed it happening over the past two years alone. Taking those results even further, one in five reported that … Read the rest
