MachineGames is rather excited over really fast storage in the upcoming consoles.

While folks have always been able to buy fast storage for PC, having super-fast SSDs in the upcoming consoles is key to the player experience, according to Wolfenstein developer MachineGames.

Speaking in an interview on the Bethesda website, chief technology officer Jim Kjellin said this helps the team change how it thinks about game design.

“The historical issue of having to wait for loading to finish or artificially slowing the pacing before you can do major changes to the player experience will be a thing of the past,” he said.

“With these super-fast SSDs, we don’t need to consider ways of entertaining the gamer while the levels load any longer,” added production director John Jennings.

“This allows for bigger worlds and letting players jump around seamlessly within them are going to provide some exciting new experiences. I’m … Read the rest

Dual screens are having a moment. With legions of former office workers now ensconced comfortably at the kitchen table, portable USB second screens and full-fat gaming monitors have seen precipitous spikes in popularity. After all, there’s a big gap between what’s comfortable and convenient for an hour or two in a coffee shop and a setup that’ll suit a seven hour workday. However, there is an alternative to an add-on screen: an ultra-premium laptop that builds a second screen into the lower chassis, giving you that dual-screen experience from a single allegedly portable* device. Asus first introduced their take on the concept with the creative-focused Zenbook Pro Duo last year, but we’re looking at the next iteration: the gaming-grade ROG Zephyrus Duo.

Five months after first going hands-on with this laptop in a cramped Bath pub, I’ve had the chance to test this ultra-premium dual-screen laptop in the comfort … Read the rest

The game of hockey is always changing. And the last few years, we’ve seen the speed, skill, and creativity surge as a more physical, grindy game takes a backseat. Just like veteran players have had to adapt, so does EA’s NHL series. Two years ago, EA Vancouver upgraded the skating and physics engine adding a burst of agility, responsiveness, and satisfying impact to better reflect this. This year, it’s providing more inventive options to dazzle your opponents, trying to match skill-players dominating the game today. It’s a step the series has to take, but it comes with its share of stumbles, never capturing the grace and poise it’s trying to emulate.

It should be easier to unlock attachments and weapons this weekend in the Black Ops Cold War beta.

The second weekend of the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta went live yesterday. The beta is open to everyone on PS4, but still limited to pre-orders on PC and Xbox One.

One of the more common complaints from the first weekend has been the rate at which weapons level up. Ranking up a weapon is the only way to earn attachments, of course, and with the number of available options for each one, the grind has been a little ridiculous to get a few basic items like a suppressor and higher-zoom optics.

Starting later today at the usual reset time of 10am PT, 1pm ET, 6pm UK, 7pm CEST, double XP and double weapon XP will be activated across all platforms. This should greatly help with the … Read the rest

When was the last time we saw a game-changing reveal in the immediate run-up to the launch of a next generation console? Sony may well have pulled this out of the bag with today’s new State of Play, concentrating on the much-anticipated PlayStation 5 user interface. Sony’s menu systems have always been polished, beautiful pieces of work, but for the next generation, this is married with a truly impressive range of in-game functions. There are some impressive new improvements to existing options but also things we have never seen before in a console. Digital Foundry had the chance to see the interface ahead of time and to talk about the new system with SIE’s Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of platform and planning management.

And at the basic level, the user interface itself does not disappoint. We’ve had hints of sorts about the look and feel of the system … Read the rest

Ghost of Tsushima was an incredibly harrowing samurai tale that PlayStation 4 players fell in love with. Now, a new experience arrives with Legends, bringing with it exciting new content and ways to become one with the ways of the ghost. Legends is the first major content drop for the Sucker Punch tale and it comes bringing with it New Game+ and several memorable co-op experiences. One of the newest features on the way is that of raids and this addition is unforgiving, detailed, and offers the perfect chance to troll your fellow player.

We sat down with Ghost of Tsushima’s creative director Nate Fox alongside senior staff designer Darren Bridges to talk a little more about the Legends update, but it is when the topic of raids comes up that we realize how much fun this addition can potentially be.

Like many other co-op … Read the rest
