There’s a Viking belief that the paths we walk are predetermined, and that the threads of our lives are already woven like strands in a collective tapestry. Where your own thread encounters others, even where it ends, are points in history already sewn together by the Fates. But the Vikings also believed in an idea of free will, in the possibility to see the path prophecy might have chosen and the ability to resist it, to fight for your own destiny and the destinies of those whose lives you might touch. Such ideas run through the brilliant narrative of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and the life of its heroine Eivor, to lift this beautiful game into a saga for the ages.

A Viking-set Assassin’s Creed is a perfect setting for a series which has always been obsessed by the ideas of order versus resistance, of Assassins versus Templars (or again here, … Read the rest

The Assassin’s Creed franchise draws people in for many reasons. Over the years, it has provided stealth-focused infiltration, stylish encounters, high-seas adventures, and other elements – but not always in equal measure. Each installment hits different sweet spots for different players with varying degrees of success, but for the first time in the series, the balance feels perfect in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Bioware has announced the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which is a remastered version of the Mass Effect trilogy. The studio also confirmed a new game in the series is in the works.

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition is probably one of the worst kept secrets in gaming at the moment, but it’s nice to have confirmation.

“For many months now, our team at BioWare has been hard at work updating the textures, shaders, models, effects, and technical features of three enormous games,” says the blog post. “Our goal was not to remake or reimagine the original games, but to modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form.

“It’s been amazing to see the adventures of Commander Shepard take on new life in super-sharp resolution, faster framerates, and beautiful visual enhancements. As game developers, we always hope that our … Read the rest

Where do you find the heart of a new piece of hardware? Thankfully, Sony’s included it on the hard-drive of every PlayStation 5 it’s shipping: Astro’s Playroom is a pre-installed 3D platformer that puts the console and its DualSense controller through their paces, and plenty more besides. It’s a thing of spark and wit, and quite possibly the best 3D platformer I’ve played outside of Nintendo’s own efforts.

If you’ve played PlayStation VR’s Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, you may well have seen this coming. This is another Sony Japan Studio joint, headed up by French designer Nicolas Doucet, and it inherits an awful lot from the delightful little 2018 game. Captain Astro returns, Aibo’s distant cousin serving as an affable lead loaded with a jetpack-enabled double-jump and always ready with a gleeful wave to camera. Like the best platform characters, he’s buoyant with his own inner life even before you’ve … Read the rest

Take-Two thinks that it should be asking for more than $60 for its releases.

That’s according to CEO and chairman Strauss Zelnick, who was asked by an investor during its recent financial about whether the company would consider making titles like Grand Theft Auto free-to-play. The exec said that he feels the company sells its products for less than they are worth.

The exec’s reasoning is that people buy games like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 for $60, but then they can enjoy their online modes entirely free of charge.

“We deliver the highest quality experiences in the business and we charge much less for them than we believe they’re worth to consumers,” Zelnick said.

“And then we deliver typically an ongoing component that is free. And that’s already a great deal of value at any monetisation, of course, it’s totally optional.”
