With the arrival of Mafia Definitive Edition, the trilogy is finally complete. All three games are brought up-to-date to modern consoles but ironically, it’s the first Mafia title that features the most advanced technology of all – including a fascinating software-based alternative to ray traced reflections.

It’s a feature that’s common to all console versions, where the technological differences are fairly minimal – and almost par for the course. Curiously, both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X operate at a native 1440p resolution, though the Microsoft platform enjoys improved shadow quality, ambient occlusion and a better lock on the target 30 frames per second. It’s business as usual on PS4 and Xbox One with a 1080p/900p divide, and all versions use temporal anti-aliasing – which does present some banding issues. As is often the case, there’s the sense that the vanilla Xbox One has the most visual compromises: I immediately … Read the rest

The promised cross-play for Apex Legends is coming rather soon, and you can participate in a beta for the feature.

You will be able to participate in the Apex Legends cross-play beta October 6 through Origin for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

The feature will be enabled by default and will allow you to group up with players on other platforms. You will also be able to use voice-chat. Cross-progression will not be part of this update.

How it will work, is players on PS4 and Xbox One will be auto matches while those on the PC will remain together due to configurations. But if there is a group of both PC and console players, the group will squad up on the PC servers.

If you aren’t interested in cross-play, it can be disabled in the settings menu; however, queue times can get “very very long,” according to Respawn EntertainmentRead the rest

Today, we can lift the lid on just how powerful Xbox Series X is when it comes to backwards compatibility – and to cut a long story short, it’s hugely impressive. As we write, Microsoft is still validating individual Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One titles for use on the system, but we’ve still got a vast range of games to get our teeth into: titles that gives us some idea of just how potent the new console’s back-compat capabilities are. However, it’s important to stress one thing: while Series X runs old games with full clocks, every compute unit and the full 12 teraflop of compute, it does so in compatibility mode – you aren’t getting the considerable architectural performance boosts offered by the RDNA 2 architecture.

Our test system arrived last week, and Microsoft describes it as being non-final hardware – indeed, it’s labelled as a prototype on … Read the rest

I used to live on an island. What I loved most about that temporary home was the very particular geography. The Outer Hebrides are flat and relatively barren, save for a few dark hills squatting on the horizon. There’s a real mood to the place, and an uninterrupted horizon – somehow the sky appears bigger than anywhere else in the world. Probably because of the lack of trees. Everytime my grandad arrived at the airport from the mainland, he’d make the same comment on this absence – “It’s quite bleak, isn’t it?” It was hard to argue the point. Also unique to these Scottish isles (and the west coast of Ireland) is the “machair”, which is Gaelic for a type of low lying grassy plains. Because of how exposed the land is there, sand continually blows ashore – swept up by great Atlantic gales – and so you get this … Read the rest

In the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War four-person co-op mode DNA: Zombies, players can expect a fresh, new narrative along with a new cast of characters.

The mode includes new ways to progress, classic Perks, and Cold War weapons.

Storywise, it takes place in the early ‘80s, but its “roots reach back even further into the past.”
